Sound Reflection

1. Where you able to find places and spaces where you could really listen? Yes, I thought it was interesting to listen to the sounds in the stairwell. Everything echoed and it trapped the noise in a unique way.
2. Was it possible to move without making a sound? No. There was always some kind of noise no matter how much movement you did.
3. What happened when you plugged your ears, and then unplugged them? When I plugged my ears all the noise seemed to disappeared and this odd echoing noise went through my ears. It was interesting because I was chewing gum at the time and that noise was very different with my ears plugged. When I unplugged my ears the noise automatically came back and made me very alert.
4. What types of sounds were you able to hear? When plugging my ears I could hear a muttering echoe noise, the sound of my gum, and a stern noise when I stomped my foot on the ground.
5. Were you able to differentiate between sounds that had a recognizable source and those sounds you could not place? It was easy to differentiate most of the time. People talking, doors opening and closing, phones ringing, peoples shoes against the ground, and gushing wind were the most noticeable. Some that were hard were the noise of radiators and outside noise that seemed distant. It was hard to know exactly what was making that noise.
6. Were you able to differentiate human, mechanical, and natural sounds? Yes. I think that we are around so many different sounds every day it is easy to tell what the type of sound is coming from.
7. Were you able to detect subtleties, changes, or variations in the everpresent drone? Yes. When we went outside, and when we went underground to the parking garage.
8. Extremely close sounds? Sounds coming from very far away? Everythng seems much closer in the parking garage. Such as, cars passing by, people talking, car engines ect.
9. Were you able to intervene in the urban landscape and create your own sounds by knocking on a resonant piece of metal, activating wind chimes, etc.? Yes. I ripped a piece of paper in half and noticed how many people listened to it.
10. Do you fell you have a new understanding or appreciation of the sounds of our contemporary landscape/cityscape? Yes. They go unnoticed everyday. There are so many cool and interesting sounds that people don’t realize.
11. How do you think your soundwalk experience will affect your practice as a media artist, if at all? I definitally will give more time to detail.
